#Throw Back Thursday

July 20, 2017

I had a lovely moment earlier this week and I thought that I would share with you all…

I first became interested in photography as a ballet student back in the ‘90’s.  Come recital time, the costumes, lighting and athleticism of the dancers, you just couldn't find something more beautiful.  I knew nothing about photography, but I took my little point and shoot and set off to see what I could do.  As I knew the dances well, I could get myself into position and capture the key moments of the performance. The first group of photos turned out pretty good and I wondered how much better I could get if I actually learnt more about photography and got myself a decent camera and lens.  This is where my love of photography began…

Now to the image above, circa 1992 - not technically a fabulous photo by any means, taken on an automatic film camera with flash at that first recital (eek!).  However, one of those little girls, in her first ballet recital, develops a passion for the art form, has natural talent, works hard and grows up to become a professional ballerina.   This month, after a 12 year career with The Australian Ballet Company, Brooke Lockett announced her retirement.

Now I don’t know Brooke personally (although we do have mutual friends and our Grandma’s played cards together back in their 80’s) but I did remember that I had this photo.  I thought how fitting that her ballet career had come full circle starting and ending in a yellow tutu (seen below as a fairy in The Sleeping Beauty).  So I reached out, introduced myself and let her know that I think that I’ve got this photo of her.  Well her excitement upon receiving a copy of this photo was just delightful and brought me so much joy to be able to share with her.

This is one of the ways in which photography makes me happy.

So there you go, first blog post completed, quite fitting that it goes back to the start where it all began!

Kind Regards,

Fi xx
